Here at Finca La Salada , the avocado is our cornerstone as we use it to produce our Finca La Salada delicacies and is our pride crop in our Finca La Salada.
There are very few areas in Europe where the conditions are suitable for growing this unique fruit as it’s a very delicate crop and requires well drained soil. It also depends on water with low salinity and cannot endure extremely cold conditions.
Due to the limited supply in Europe, finding a European, organic avocado of exquisite quality is not easy. Most of the avocados consumed in Europe come from South America and usually takes more than a month to be shipped over which not only produces a high carbon footprint but can’t compete with the closeness and freshness of our avocados which are harvested at optimum ripeness.
At Finca La Salada , this has been our motivation for working hard to grow this incredible fruit on our own land and becoming the only ones to produce European organic avocadoes 12 months a year!
According to the Water Fooprint Network, for every kilo of avocados, 2000 litres of water is needed but we at Finca La Salada have reduced this amount by 70%! In our Finca la Salada, we use a drip irrigation system which gives each tree the exact amount of water that’s necessary. In our Finca la Salada, we are a benchmark of sustainability in water as we reuse treated water for our irrigation. We have two water reservoirs which collect the rain and reuse it for irrigation. We also grow an aquatic plant called Lemna gibba and is used to prevent water from evaporating in our reservoirs. This is just one example of how we aim to use water efficiently.
For all our efforts, we’re sure that once you try our unique avocado, you’ll be back for more, not only for sustainability motives but also for the chance to have organic European avocados with its unforgettable flavour and smooth, creamy texture, available all year round.
